MEET NOMO — Social Media Series (Animated Mascot Campaign)

Project Overview

This project was a social media animation series for NOMO, an app designed to help users spend less time scrolling and build better relationships with social media without banning apps. The goal was to create short, attention-grabbing posts that encouraged real-life engagement.

The campaign needed to be relatable, humorous, and visually dynamic, connecting directly with a young, college-aged audience while reinforcing NOMO’s mission.

NOMO's art direction embraces the energy of real-life connections by showcasing vibrant social moments, embracing imperfections and unpolished details, celebrating the weird and wonderful.

Process & Collaboration

I worked with live-action footage filmed on university campuses (primarily UCLA), featuring students interacting naturally, with one or two performers in NOMO’s Thumb mascot costume.

  • Selected and edited clips to highlight the most engaging moments.
  • Designed and animated the mascot’s interactions with live-action elements, including playful replacements, pauses, and motion effects. For example, the mascot became a basketball player’s head while spinning a ball or popped up in a treadmill scene to interact with gym-goers.
  • Added dynamic text and motion graphics for the taglines, emphasizing NOMO’s benefits and playful messaging.

Collaboration included the marketing team providing taglines and campaign objectives. I handled all animation, editing, and visual storytelling for the series.

Motion & Visual Storytelling

The animations had to integrate seamlessly with live-action footage, requiring careful timing, masking, and compositing. Each video was unique in text, pacing, and animated interventions, but together they maintained a cohesive series aesthetic that reinforced the NOMO brand.

My Role

  • Conceptual Animation: Designed and executed all mascot interactions with live-action video
  • Editing & Storytelling: Selected footage, timed animations, and inserted tagline graphics
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Worked with the marketing team to align animation style with brand tone

Outcome

The series produced five distinct social media videos, collectively forming a cohesive campaign that engaged the target audience, drove awareness for NOMO, and demonstrated the creative potential of combining live-action and animated elements.

Key Takeaways

  • Integrating mascot animation with live-action footage enhances engagement and creates memorable visual experiences.
  • Short, playful sequences paired with clear messaging are ideal for social media campaigns targeting young audiences.
  • Iterating across multiple videos while maintaining a consistent series aesthetic requires careful planning of motion style, timing, and text placement.
